I believe that kids want to run, but they have a lifetime of conditioning in other sports and situations to avoid running and are compelled to think it's a punishment. Running is fun, anyone can partake in it, and the enjoyment can last a lifetime, with no regard to age, gender, height, weight or coordination. It's so satisfying to coach someone and see them enjoy it in their youth, then have them return in adulthood and start training again with the same fervor.
I've loved running since I started at age 14, back in 1989. Inspired by my high school coach, I began coaching and giving back to the sport in 1994, and have been coaching athletes of all ages and abilities for the last 30 years. I run and strength train 6 days a week, and I compete all over the country and around the world, too!
I believe in sportsmanship first, and will always do everything I can to model it for my athletes. We don't focus on just winning, as it's situational. The winner is usually the person who is the best mentally and physically prepared, and who wants it the most. If the winner is a poor sport to other competitors, the term "winner" no longer has meaning. Of those that train with me, many win races overall, or age group competitions, but the focus is on running for oneself, and letting the win happen organically, as a result of hard work and dedication.
